Discussion Group

These meetings are designed for adult adoptees, facilitated by adult adoptees, to support one another and offer a safe place to share, discuss, and gain words for better understanding &/or expressing our adoption experiences.

Each week we will discuss topics from the book Adoption Therapy, which is an anthology written by 13 adult adoptees, 7 individuals with mental health degrees, and 3 adoptive parents. Time is given for individual sharing, but no one is required to do so- We encourage each person to participate, or just listen, however they wish.

Chapter 4- Discusses the myth of reactive attachment disorder . In writing about triggers and behaviors the Adoptee author says, It’s difficult to identify a trigger when we have no conscious memory of the original traumatic event… It doesn’t make “sense” to shy away from someone who reaches out to hug us when we are older. It’s not normal to resist comfort. Yet the fear of being removed from a safe place and held against our will by a stranger has never left our body…”

Can anyone relate?
