About the book:
Random Families is about the unprecedented families that have grown up at the intersection of new reproductive technologies, social media, and the human desire for belonging. Children of the same donor and their families, with the help of the internet, can now locate each other and make contact. Based on over 350 interviews with children (ages 10-28), their parents and related donors from all over the U.S., Random Families chronicles the chain of choices that couples and single mothers make from what donor to use to how to participate (or not) in donor sibling networks. Children reveal their understanding of a donor, the donor's spot on the family tree and the meaning of their donor siblings. Through rich first-person accounts of network membership, the book illustrates how these extraordinary relationships-woven from bits of online information and shared genetic ties-are transformed into new possibilities for kinship. Random Families offers down-to-earth stories from real families to highlight just how truly distinctive these contemporary new forms of family are.

All are welcome - this is a space to reflect, share perspectives, and support one another in navigating parenting. See the schedule below for chapters for each book group.

This month, we will use our community dinner time to discuss Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love, written by Dani Shapiro. Bring your own snack or dinner and chat about the book with others in our community. If you are unable to read the full book beforehand, please feel free to join in on the reflection and conversation!
Please RSVP to caitlin@encompassadoptees.org.
About the Book:
What makes us who we are? What combination of memory, history, biology, experience, and that ineffable thing called the soul defines us?
In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA for analysis, Dani Shapiro received the stunning news that her father was not her biological father. She woke up one morning and her entire history–the life she had lived–crumbled beneath her.
Inheritance is a book about secrets–secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman’s urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in–a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover. — https://danishapiro.com/books/inheritance/

This is a casual discussion group meant to support adoptive, fostering, & kinship parents and to build relationships between parents and their adopted/fostered children of all ages through community, conversation, and educational materials.
Each month we discuss part of a book or topic. We do this in an attempt to cover a larger variety of related issues, to increase our knowledge and awareness of the information that is out there, and to maximize our resources for the future. Although not required, sharing personal experiences and asking questions are encouraged. There is No requirement to read the chapters or to come to all discussions. Facilitators are committed to increasing their learning and understanding through the insight and perspective of other triad members, This group offers a safe place to share individual opinions and personal experiences, and ask questions openly and honestly about relinquishment and adoption-related issues.
-NOTE- Encompass Adoptees encourages critical thinking that takes into account all triad members in regard to all books and resources. Book discussions or reading lists in no way imply agreement with all portions of a book, nor does it indicate any endorsement of the author/s, their programs, techniques, etc.
Meets every 1st Thursday of the month (except Dec for the holidays)
Online/ Zoom group -Please email us or pre-register in order to get the zoom link. After you have come once, and the group is able to verify new members are adoptive parents (to ensure a safe space for all attending), you can request to be added to the email list that receives the new link and password each month.

Encompass Adoptees’ youth program is for kids adopted, in fostered care, or in kinship care between 7-12/13 years old. The program curriculum is designed by an adult adoptee who is also a therapist, to offer aer-based activities and interactions that promote reliance building, character development, and support in processing experiences related to being adopted, fostered, and/or kinshipped.
